OK, I have a NaNo problem.
Half way through my current story and another story has hit me.. and it wants to come out. Do I be a NaNo rebel and start this new story... so long as I hit 50,000 words in 30 days it's OK right...?

I say to run with your new story, Beth! Otherwise, it will just nag at you.

When you say '50,000 words in 30 days' do you mean you'd combine the word counts of your old NaNo story and this new one? Or are you starting fresh with word count?

Having thought about it, I vote rebel! But that might just be the pirate in me talking...
At the end of the day, NaNoWriMo is a very personal thing. Some might even go as far as to say lonely, despite all the support from LimeBirds. You have to make the decision based on what you'd feel comfortable with.
Do you class it as cheating? If so, make some notes on the second story and stick to the first story. If not, who cares what anyone else thinks - Go for it!
Note: This mentality only applies to NaNoWriMo. It's probably not a good idea to apply it to everyday things like relationships or bank robbery.

Personally, Beth, I worry that the new story is coming along because you might be avoiding the other one. Especially if you're having a tough time with it. I think you need to ask yourself about the original story -- how much it means to you, whether you are truly interested in writing it, is it a story you enjoy? Or are you avoiding it because you've hit writer's block? If you have lost interest in your first story, then I say dump it and focus on your second story. However, if you still care about your first story but you're struggling because of a plotline, then try to work around that and stay with the story. Like LordScree suggests, take notes on the second one so that you don't forget your ideas.

Haha Mayumi - Thanks I know, it was nagging at me, I kept dreaming about it. Kate/Scree - I'm currently being a rebel and combining my stories. Thanks for the advice guys! I don't consider it cheating because there are many who use NaNo to think up new ideas and edit stories. I'm still planning to write 50,000 words in 30 days, just in two different stories! I don't think I'm avoiding my first story because of writer's block, I just never really connected with it. It's a new genre for me and one that I was struggling with, and don't think that it had enough to it. I might keep it as a short story, as I do still like the idea, but might work better as a short one! I'm focusing on my second story and wish that I'd thought of it at the beginning, and I keep having new ideas and imagining my characters which is how it should be! I don't want to lose it now because I'm afraid I'll lose it forever! Thanks all!

Good for you, Beth! I was going to suggest seeing if you could combine the two together, since you've already done so much work on the first, but you already beat me to that. Sounds like this second story is the one you're meant to write, now. Good luck!

I'm getting there, how is yours going?

I wrote about 3K yesterday, but I still don't love these characters the way I think I should do. I'm just going through the motions of filling out my outline. One kind of interesting sidetrack scene (a background moment for one of my protagonists) did pop into my head, though, that I may write through, even if it's only extraneous detail that I take out after the fact. I think revising my other novel has made me more aware of what is *not* needed to tell a story, though, and it's subconsciously truncating my word output!

That's pretty much how I felt about my first story! Ohh, that's always good, keep on chugging!

Hi Mayumi, could you use your knowledge of your previous revision to mark or colourise the text where you think it doesn't fit, rather than avoid writing it? This way it'll be nice and clear when you come back to it, you'll still be able to use the words to up your count for NaNo, and you may find you'll use some or all of the text elsewhere in the end result (you won't be able to use it unless you write it at some point!) It'd be a shame to lose some important back stories just because you feel they wouldn't be in the final version. Having said that, my story is a mess of random backstory snippets and irrelevant meta information and I've never really gone through the revision process before, so your experience will certainly trump mine on this.

I'm finding that I'm not really "into" the story I'm writing. Mostly it's a hard slog just to keep the word count up. What's keeping me going is that I still really believe in the original idea, and there are certain parts that I have really enjoyed writing, so I just want to get it finished, and then look at it as a whole at the end.
It's the lighter/comedic moments that I mostly enjoy writing, so I perhaps should have made it all a light/comedic novel, except that the main story idea behind it I think works better as a gritty piece. I don't know!

Just a quick reminder that if anyone has managed to reach 50,000 words by today, they can 'win' from today onwards!
