Hello all! Is any one taking part in NaNoWriMo this November? (National Novel Writing Month) - www.nanowrimo.org/The goal is to write a novel (at least 50,000 words) in the month of November. Will you be taking the challenge?

50,000 words in a MONTH?! That's craziness!
Interestingly, Matthew Lewis (he of The Monk fame) claimed to have written his complete book in only 6 weeks. In an age long before typewriters, if this is true, then it's quite extraordinary!

I know, it is absolutely crazy. Also you're meant to do about 1,500 a day which doesn't sound that much when you break it down. ( I write about 5000 a day at work!)
The only thing that I'm worried about is that it's pretty much write as you go along. I don't really write like that, I do sections, go back, write the end, go back, etc. I am up for the challenge though, you fancy taking part too?

Hi all,
Looking for a bit of advice/motivation, about 2 months ago i decided i would try and take on the mammoth task of writing, pencilling, inking and colouring my own comic, I'm finding the writing is ticking along quite nicely but now that this NaNoWriMo thing has arisen I am considering just writing that story into a novel, and then adapting into a comic after here lies the problem:
Which person should I write in? i've never studied literature etc and I struggle when writing to stay in the same style i.e swapping between 1st and 3rd person when writing comics this doesnt really matter because the reader is essentially looking in at the story so what I write (besides dialogue) is just for me to decipher later into frames.
This story is a romance set around a comic store so I dont know whether to do 1st person and switch between characters per chapter or whether to just write in 3rd person (which i find quite difficult) what I would love is something inbetween. As you can probably tell I have no idea what im doing and would love some advice from those that have written/studied writing as to how to start and how to find a style I can manage.
P.s is there such a thing as 2nd person if so what is it?
Thanks a bunch
Soph

P.s is there such a thing as 2nd person if so what is it? Thanks a bunch Soph Hi Sophie, I’m happy that you have decided to take on NaNoWriMo, it’s a great challenge. The person you should write in is completely a matter of preference. Some people might think that it’s ‘natural’ to write in the first person as it’s more of a ‘me’ perspective, so you can just write as if writing about yourself. However, some people prefer to be able to add in insight from other characters. Some writers will find it impossible to write in first, some in third. I would probably recommend writing in third person for your first writing as it can be easier to be a bit creative. It’s very tricky with first person as you have to be able to create more as you can be slightly stifled by only being in one character’s head. You may also find that you’re stuffing in random sequences when you’re writing in first person, so as to be able to get your character to see/hear things that are crucial to your story. So, can be trickier to unfold plots etc. So, using third person can make it easier to be able to go into the minds of all of your characters, thus making it easier to unfold plots. BUT, then again, you may find it hard to have to juggle all of your new characters, but that’s the fun of writing and developing your new found character friends. Yes, there is something known as ‘second person’, but it’s not really commonly used for novels. You will generally find this type of writing in things like self help books or cookery books. So for example, ‘You can find the cat on the mat’ or ‘You are not the type to be round here’. It’s tricky for me to explain, but I wouldn’t use it for a novel, it’s more suited to blogs etc. When writing a piece of fiction, I wouldn’t swap between first and third person as it can get confusing and complicated. I’ve only seen a couple of writers use this, but I would say you would have to be very skilled to pull this off properly. Well, I think as it is a romance it could be nice to do it alternate chapters, but then you’ve got the problem of having to develop each character’s style to change each chapter. This could mean a lot more in depth thinking about what you want to write etc. If it was me, I would stick to third person. I’m sure it will be hard to get used to, but I can help you out if you get stuck. That way you can delve into the minds of all your characters and I also always picture comic type books with a big narrator, if that makes sense? Hope this helps anyways and good luck! Beth

Thanks Beth thats actually really helpful, I think what i'll do is just... Start writing! and see what happens. I read an interesting stlye recently where they write in 3rd person but during dialogue, they also write the thoughts of the character in 1st person in italics... its hard to explain but it was quite effective, although i dont think ill be going that route as it seems incredibly difficult.
Anyway im gonna give it a crack and see what happens.. you dont know until you try i guess!

You write ~5k a day at work?! Oh my, you do put me to shame! I'm probably more like 2k to be honest.
Good luck to everyone taking part in the event. Just wish I had the time, energy and motivation to join you all! :-)

I know, I'm pretty scared and it's probably going to be rubbish but at least I said that I tried!

I had decided to partake in this literary insanity. Not like my life isn't insane enough, but writing makes it seem more dignified. I believe that limebirdbeth is following my blog as I try to fight my way out of a cliche writing life made by the Company of King, Lovecraft and Poe Ltd. Oh well, if NaNoWriMo doesn't drive me over the edge, there's always Lady Gaga. Cheers, Jeffrey

I’m a bit behind at the moment, but hoping to be able to catch up this evening. I am following your blog and enjoying your posts! What’s your name over at NaNo? I’m (predictably) limebirdbeth. See you over there!

Good luck to all!

Hello there and welcome to the forums. It is great fun but utter madness and wow that word count is great! I’m on around 25,000 words at the moment so I’m so happy to be over half way! Good luck to you too!

I nearly stopped writing for good the first year I tried Nano... I'm doing it this year though... 37,000 words was my limit.. Then my story had a massive meltdown, I started writing swearwords all over the page just to make the word count up, and I honestly felt Jack Nicholson taking over my bones at one point. NaNoWriMo 2012 will be interesting...

Don't take it so seriously. Write what you can write. When you get deadlocked, move onto another scene. Yell f--- at the computer, type it to make yourself feel better. But don't give up because that is sad. You made it that far, sometimes it just takes pushing yourself.
