I've been debating on whether or not to share this with y'all... as much as I like to write I find it hard to share things . Anyway, I wrote this about a week ago out of nowhere because I "felt like writing something" I didn't know what I was writing, and this is what came out of that. I haven't gone through and edited it or anything - because I'm not so great at editing my own work so if there are mistakes here I am sorry. I tired to keep the tense correct. I don't know why but for some reason I have a bad habit of going back and forth from past to present tense. Anyway, I hadn't even titled it until now because I suck at titling things. But here it is... let me know what you think good, bad, ugly...
What was that noise under my bed? I crept out from under my covers, grabbed the flashlight I keep on my nightstand, and slowly bent to peer into the dark void.
No.
I stopped myself. I’m pushing 30 for Christ’s sake; there is no monster under my bed. I should have stopped believing in things like this years ago. Still, it wouldn’t hurt if I went into the living room to watch TV instead of sleeping. Who needs sleep anyway?
The phone rang at 7 a.m. just as the drool was starting to pool under my head.
“Hello?” I tried to disguise the fact that I had been sleeping, I’m sure I wasn’t convincing.
“Did you hear me?” I heard a sugary sweet voice of an old woman say.
My heart began to pound. “Hear what?”
“What are you talking about?” My husband’s voice came through the phone. “I just said I’m finally through with my meetings and will be leaving Singapore in the morning. You alright?”
“Sure, fine. “ I lied. “Will be glad to have you home”
“Listen, gotta jet, but I’ll call before I leave. Love you.” He hung up.
I quickly threw the phone back down onto the receiver. Light was beginning to filter in through the curtain. I pulled myself together and convinced myself to go have a look under the bed.
With a baseball bat in one hand and my flashlight in the other, I slowly lifted the sheet out of my way and flicked the light on.
Relief, there was nothing.
But then my light caught the reflection of two eyes, staring back at me from the far corner.
“You did hear me, didn’t you?” the same sweet voice came, from under my bed. “Come on now, don’t be afraid, you can trust me.”
I tried to scream, but no sound came out. I frantically tried to get up, but whatever “she” was came after me faster than I knew could be possible.
These claw-like things gripped down on both my wrists, I dropped everything I was carrying. Her razor sharp teeth pierced my skin over and over, a thousand times. Were vampires real?
I couldn’t feel anything. Actually, I started to feel good. I began to giggle.
“What are you doing?” I said, slurring as if I had been drinking.
“I told you you could trust me, now didn’t I deary?” Her sweet voice was actually soothing me. I was feeling bliss like I didn’t know was possible.
“But what…” I couldn’t speak anymore, my mouth just turned my words to mush.
She dragged me back into the corner under my bed, and I saw then that there was a hole in the floor. She went down first, and then pulled me after. I couldn’t feel anything anymore, if anything was hurting, I don't know it.
She pulled me into an opening. I can’t tell you how far under the earth we were. There are a dozen of things just like her. I could finally see her clearly, gray skin, cataract eyes, and rows of sharp teeth. Her fingernails are like claws, and as black as the night. I was smiling at her, at everyone. I knew if I could make sound come out of my mouth I’d be giggling. I almost felt like I loved this… thing… but I can’t explain why.
“Sit up deary, you’re feeling good now aren’t you?” Her horrific face smiled down at me.
I tried to nod yes, but I’m not sure if I actually moved or not.
The thing that had caught me turned to the crowd, “Finally her husband left! I told you I could catch her.” The crowd roared with laughter, and descended upon me. “Now, we feast!”
Did You Hear?
