Lol as I said I have no idea of American geography, quite shameful really. miami and Florida were the only two places i Could think of that had a coastline!
I agree I don't think Katniss made that big a change it's seems it's just the world and people around her that changed. Your point about her simmering down is a good point that I didn't think of so thank you for that it's all making a bit more sense from a writing point of view now.
Out of interest where would you place the district that rue and thresh were from in real life I mean? Only because in the films they have cast black actors I don't have a problem with that ofc as long as it makes sense geographically. I always put them as very tanned from working in the fields or was it orchards I can't remember now!
I am definitely all for equality in films but it really gets to me when producers insist on "token" black actors in films when it wasn't in the original story. As a author it would really annoy me if MY characters were changed like that. I hope everyone understands I am in no way intending to be offensive in any way.

I remember that they worked "south" in the orchards. I think it did say in the book that Rue had dark eyes and dark skin, so that would make sense if black actors were cast for those roles.
I still can't find concrete info about all of the districts in terms of where each one is located in the United States. This is what I came up with so far:
Katniss' district (12) is in the Appalacian Mts. The Capitol is in the northwestern Rocky Mts of US and Canada. District 2 is near the Rocky Mts (Cato & Clove). District 7 (Johanna) is somewhere with a lot of pine forests, that could be anywhere in the northern part of US. District 9 is grain, leading me to think midwest like Iowa or Nebraska District 11 is agriculture (Thresh and Rue) and is south somewhere District 4 is fishing, and I used to picture NE/Eastern seaboard but it could also be California/Oregon/Washington.
If I learn more, I'll be sure to post it!

Thanks that is really helpful i'll be definately looking at an american map on my lunch break . Thanks for clearing the Rue thing up i must of skipped over that description when i was reading so furiously so thank you for letting me know as i am much happier about the casting now the little girl they have playing Rue is a really sweet looking girl called Amandla Stenberg and just looking at her picture on IMDB is already making me dread the moment that she is killed, i think the whole cinema will be blubbering like babies. Here is the full list of cast if your interested

I just saw the end of the discussion, clicked on it by accident. However, I have the answer to your question K!
23rd March for USA and UK (strange that it's the same, but these are what my sources say) *quickly runs out of thread without seeing any other spoilers*

OH NO Beth! I hope it didn't ruin everything for you!
I can't wait to see the film, from the trailer it really does look spot on (other than the omission of Madge from the movies)

I hated when she died, even though as you are reading those books you KNOW that the characters you are becoming attached to have to die, by nature of the games. Which is really horrible, to think about being in Katniss, or Rue's shoes - because they really were out to help each other. Sad stuff!

I know its going to be heartbreaking im normally quite stonefaced besides From when johnny 5 dies in short circuit 2 but i know this is gonna have me in tears. I was thinking about the second book last night an I would of really liked in the second book that every single tribute at the sound of the horn would of just stood still and shouted no in unison or something. I can Imagine being a tribute once and just about coming out sane on the other side but to then be disrespected that much and made to go back in like ur nothing better than an animal I couldn't and wouldn't of done it.

Sophie, maybe I'm misunderstanding your post, but I didn't think the tributes had a choice to go back in again. Actually, as I write this, that part was confusing to me. They had died, but then were somehow turned into mutations and thus, evil? Does anyone have a clear idea of how that all happened?

Well the mutation thing was hinted at in second book it was kind of hinted that the dead tributes that turned into mutts and attacked at the end of the first book weren't really turned into the mutts the Capitol just made mutts and either designed them to look like the dead tributes or used the body parts like the eyes to make them look like that so they would be harder to kill. And yeah I knew they didn't get a choice about going back in I just meant I thought as the tributes were older and obviously not happy about it they would of banded together and just refused to fight but then again it would of been fairly boring If it happened that way. I don't know I think I'm just rambling like an idiot.

I might have completely misunderstood the mutt thing though. I thought the same thing Sophie - Just refuse to fight!! But like you say that wouldn't be a good book at all. And if they had refused the fight anyway the Capitol would have found some way to kill them all off by controlling the arena or something.

OMG I HAVE FINALLY FINISHED! Huzzah! These are my little bits of opinion... Firstly.. I have to agree with Laura, I'm definitely Team Peeta. I spent the whole of the last book hoping he would get better so they could be together. Although I was a bit annoyed when I thought he had sided with the stronger players, but I did think he had another agenda though. I don't know, I just felt like Gale only got interested when he saw her with someone else. I know in Mockingjay he does say that it's 6 months before the games, but I just didn't warm to him. Also, similarly to Laura, I had a look at what actors were playing the characters, so I had a good picture of what they looked like. R.E - The tributes going back in, yeah I see what you mean Sophie. It would have been good if they all decided not to fight, but most people's survival instincts kick in making it difficult. Also, regarding Rue, she says in the books that she had dark skin, so I think that her and her family are black in the books! The Muttations were explained a bit better in book two as the fact that they were all created from the beginning I think (so everyone had had a muttation created) and they just rolled out the ones that had died. In Mockingjay they said that muttations are created to hone on people's worst fears. So the wolf ones looked like the the dead tributes, the trackerjackers screaming freaked out the contestants and the scary white ones in the last book smelt like the roses that make Katniss heave. Also, I think I picked up on something which she uses to keep the tension. At the end of the majority of her chapters she ends it with a sort of cliffhanger, like "and then I got shot in the chest." or "and then my arrow left my bow and went straight through his heart" etc. I can't actually think of any more, but she does it a lot! I think also that she uses short chapters and they are split into three dominant sections, it makes it easier to go 'Oh go on, just one more chapter' etc. Even though I LOVED the books, I did have some difficulty picturing where they were in the last book when they got into the Capitol. When they were in the underground passages, I was confused where they were and when they came above ground and when they went into different rooms and stuff. It didn't really matter that much, but sometimes I found myself going 'Eh? Where am I?' Anyhoo, yeah there's my thang. B out.

Glad you got to read them all :-) And nice to have perspective from someone who just read them , you can remember things I don't! I just thought Peeta was so sweet, and I kept hoping he'd get better once the Capital messed with his mind. I'm glad he did! I like the map of Panem you posted! I always wanted to think District 12 was where I'm from. I know they say its the Appalachian region of what was America, and I grew up in that region through Kentucky, even though Appalachia really spans a few states. The actors they got to play Katniss and Peeta are both from Kentucky so they will already sound the part :-)

Welcome to the discussion, Beth!
Like Loupy, it's nice to have you join us because you do have a clearer memory about the smaller details...
I agree with your assessment regarding the tension. That was one thing I meant to add and didn't--that each chapter (or many chapters) ended with the cliffhanger of sorts. And there was a distinct beginning, middle, and end, which I'm sure was done with the YA in mind.
Thank you for the map. I haven't looked at it yet, but I will!
And I also had trouble picturing the Capitol in Book 3. In fact (and I even hate to say this because it feels disloyal) but I felt Book 3 was rushed and Collins didn't attend to inner story/detail/motivation as closely as she did in the other books.
Basically, Book 1 was my absolute favorite of the three.
